Shooting Disciplines

The Club has excellent range facilities and caters for a wide range of shooting disciplines using Section 1 firearms.  Section 1 firearms are firearms that can only be possessed by the authority of a Firearms Certificate (FAC), mostly rifles and pistols.

The Club is Scottish Government Approved which means that members can use firearms (the Club's and other members') without having to hold a FAC.  We operate a Probationer Training Scheme approved by the National Rifle Association and all members new to shooting go through a comprehensive training course to teach them the safety procedures of the Club and the principles of marksmanship.  They are then free to take part in whatever discipline they want to specialise in. Experienced shooters joining the Club are assessed and offered any training they need to operate safely in the Club and all members are assessed annually to ensure that we maintain a safe and efficient range programme.

Target Rifle. TR is the shooting discipline often known as Bisley style shooting.  The rifles are equipped with aperture sights and matches take place from 300 to 1000 yards.  At Cawdor we can shoot back to 600 yards.

F Class Rifle. When a target rifle is equipped with a telescopic sight it is called an F Class rifle. The shooting is the same as TR but with a smaller scoring ring for the bull to allow for the more accurate sighting system.

Sporting Rifle.  Members who own sporting rifles for quarry shooting practise with them at the range.  They mostly shoot at 100 and 200 yards.  The local branch of the British Deer Society also use the range for their regular practice and competition.

Gallery Rifle including 22 rimfire rifles.  Shot at short range (25 - 50m) these low powered rifles have a whole range of matches.  Gallery Rifle is one of the most popular shooting sports in the country.

Muzzle Loading Pistol.  Another short range discipline is muzzle loading pistol (MLP).  Most people use reproduction pistols either single shot or revolvers.

The Club operates throughout the year but more often in the Summer.  The programme aims to offer something for everyone as we hold a wide range of practice evenings, practice days at weekends and regular competition.
